Fort Allen Park Trees Vandalized !

Starting during the winter of 2007-2008 it was discovered that most of the remaining evergreen trees in Fort Allen Park, particularly the cedars, have sustained intentional trunk damage from someone peeling off their bark.

City Arborist, Jeff Tarling, says that this damage pattern is unlike typical vandalism where one particular tree may be damaged and that it is obvious that these are not random events.

Wooden snow fencing was installed around the trees to give them a chance to heal. The Police Department has been notified and is giving special attention to the area.  Public Works crews will also be keeping a lookout.  Please report any suspicious behavior to the Police Departments non emergency number at 874-8575.

Friends of The Eastern Promenade has been collaborating with Regina Leonard, landscape architect hired by the city, to obtain public input on criteria for implementation of the Master Plan for the Eastern Promenade.  Among topics in her preliminary report to the city are the future plantings at Fort Allen Park.  It has been suggested that these trees be allowed to remain and live out their useful life but not be replaced.
The Moratorium on further cutting of these evergreens remains in place.
Do you wish to see the current evergreens remain?
Would you like to see replacement of any evergreens within the interior circle at Fort Allen?

Your input and suggestions are significant. Our e-mail is info@friendsofeasternpromenade.org
